The Myth of Âme - Chapter I

Journey to the mythical land of Âme

Dear Bohemians,

Today marks the beginning of our journey to the mythical land of Âme. If you missed Friday's email and are wondering what I'm talking about, I encourage you to read this first. Before we take off, a short disclaimer and cultural acknowledgement.

Though the environment in the Myth of Âme is inspired by my country of origin, Brazil, the characters are fictional and not meant to represent any past or existing peoples. I give thanks to the diverse cultural landscape that inspired my writing and thinking from a young age through tales of folklore, both sung and written. I want to especially acknowledge the Tupi-Guarani peoples of Brazil, for providing rich and sacred meaning to particular natural elements of our beloved Amazônia: Vitória Régia (water lilies) and the moon. In the Tupi-Guarani legend of the Vitória Régia, the water lily is contextualized as a previously human woman and lover of the goddess of the moon, Jaci. The Myth of Âme does not attempt to change the meaning or sacredness of these elements.

The Myth of Âme

Chapter I

Deep in the jungle, where no human had ever set foot, was a pond full of Vitória Régias (water lilies). One night during an eclipse, the moon shone a bright silver stream into a lily like a laser beam. The lily glowed, and closed.

Three days later, the lily opened, revealing a human child: Âme. With no other human in sight, the forest raised Âme like she raised all other animals. Âme learned to speak with the araras (macaws) and move with the micos (monkeys). She ate abiu and biribá from the trees. She learned bravery and independence from the onça-pintada (jaguar). And in the morning, the beija-flor (hummingbird) would come and whisper tales of love in her ear.

As she grew older, she started to spend more and more time with the beija-flor, listening to endless tales of romance, dreaming up what it would be like to live one. She felt like her life was no longer complete. She longed for something else–or someone else.

Âme waited for the next new moon, and with the bravery of a jaguar, took off on her own. She moved swiftly through the forest, climbing trees and swimming across rivers, not knowing exactly what she was looking for, but knowing that she would know once she found it.
