The Myth of Âme - Chapter II

What would you risk for a chance at love?

Today we continue our journey in the mythical land of Âme. Yesterday, we witnessed Âme fleeing her magical haven in the middle of the night, searching for something she only knew from the hummingbird's tales: love. Will Mother Nature reward her courage or penalize her naiveté?

If you missed Chapter I of the story, read this first.

The Myth of Âme

Chapter II

Âme was bathing in the pond under the full moon when she heard a sound. Rustling leaves, behind a bush at the other end of the pond. She held her breath and dove under the water, swimming in the direction of the sound. She waited underwater by the shore.

As she predicted, a figure perched above the water, trying to look in. Âme jumped out of the water onto its neck, causing the figure to fall on its back–with Âme on top. Âme’s defence crumbled when she realized she was looking at another human, with eyes like coffee beans and skin like hers. She softened, entranced.

The other human, taken aback by Âme’s strength and beauty, softened too. Âme’s wet skin and the night breeze made the warmth of each other’s bodies feel extra comforting. Neither of the two wanted to pull away.

They tried to speak, but without a common language, they touched under the moonlight and danced in the water until the moon kissed the forest goodnight.

Though the environment in the Myth of Âme is inspired by my country of origin, Brazil, the characters are fictional and not meant to represent any past or existing peoples. I give thanks to the diverse cultural landscape that inspired my writing and thinking from a young age through tales of folklore, both sung and written. I want to especially acknowledge the Tupí Guaraní peoples of Brazil, for providing rich and sacred meaning to particular natural elements of our beloved Amazônia: Vitória Régia (water lilies) and the moon. In the Tupí Guaraní legend of the Vitória Régia, the water lily is contextualized as a previously human woman and lover of the goddess of the moon, Jaci. The Myth of Âme does not attempt to change the meaning or sacredness of these elements.
